Visual „Sounding the Collection“
© Photo: Daniel Müller, design: Luis ReyesHow do you hear images? How can a space be translated, a color set to music, a surface or mood transformed into sound? What memories, atmospheres, and inner images arise when viewing an artwork, and how can these be made audible? This workshop invites participants to explore the Berlinische Galerie’s collection from an auditory perspective. Together with the artists Bea Targosz, Laura Mello, Özcan Ertek, and Andrei Cucu, participants will develop experimental sound compositions that reinterpret and expand upon selected artworks and exhibition spaces. The workshop will focus on the connection between perception, space, and sound. Participants will engage in attentive and focused listening, gather acoustic impressions within the exhibition, and explore how visual experiences can be translated into auditory narratives. Starting from individual works or spatial situations, concepts for short site specific audio pieces emerge, working with recorded sounds, speech, sound fragments, and atmospheres. A project as part of the Voluntary Social Year "Culture" 2025/26 conceived and developed by Greta Wehking.
Workshop Day 1
The first day of the workshop is dedicated to raising awareness of acoustic perception and sound research. Through listening exercises, group reflections, and experimental recordings, participants develop initial ideas and gather material both inside and outside the exhibition spaces.
Workshop Day 2
The second part focuses on artistic realization: the recorded sounds are edited, assembled, and arranged. Using simple audio editing techniques and compositional inspiration, participants create poetic, atmospheric, or narrative sound works that open up new ways of engaging with the artworks.
Final Presentation
To conclude, the created works will be presented on July 3, 2026, starting at 3 p.m., as part of a guided tour of the collection. The audio pieces are intended to remain permanently accessible to visitors and offer an additional sensory dimension to the encounter with the works.
Prerequisites
The workshop is conceived as an open platform for experimental work and is aimed at people interested in sound, art, perception, and interdisciplinary approaches. Participants must bring their own laptop, headphones, and basic experience with audio editing in a Digital Audio Workstation.
Workshop leaders: Laura Mello, Bea Targosz, Özcan Ertek, Andrei Cucu
Language: German and English
Participation fee: 5€
Note: The ticket is valid for both workshop days; no ticket is required for the final presentation.
Sound is more than music. Sound is emotion; sound is society; sound is politics; sound is perception; sound is experience; sound is art. Errant Sound is a place where various forms of sound art converge—sound installation and political discourse, electroacoustic composition and acoustic urban planning, radio art and media sculpture. Founded in 2013 as a self-managed collective in Berlin, Errant Sound brings together artistic practice, critical discourse, and international networking under one roof. Our project space is not just an exhibition hall and performance venue—it is a laboratory, a hub, and a resonant space for an art form that is particularly valued in Berlin. Learn more
