About the project
How do you hear images? How can a space, a colour or a mood be translated into sound? What memories, atmospheres, and inner images arise when viewing an artwork, and how can they be made audible?
In collaboration with four artists from the Berlin-based sound art project space https://errantsound.net/, during a two-day workshop, site-specific audio compositions were created that reinterpret and expand upon selected artworks and exhibition spaces from the permanent exhibition “Art in Berlin 1880 – 1980”.
The workshop concentrated on the question of how impressions can be captured and further developed acoustically while viewing art. The first day of the workshop was devoted to sound research. Through listening exercises and group reflections, the participants sharpened their perception. They went on to collect recordings both inside and outside the exhibition spaces.
On the second day, the sound material was edited, assembled, and developed into individual compositions. Sounds, voice recordings, and acoustic fragments were transformed into independent works that are not intended as soundtracks for the artworks, rather as personal perspectives on the works.
The 13 workshop participants presented their sound works for the first time during a public tour on July 3, 2026. They are now available on the Berlinische Galerie’s website and can be heard both in the exhibition spaces and at other locations. The compositions invite visitors to experience the Berlinische Galerie’s permanent exhibition on an additional sensory level and demonstrate that art can be perceived and explored in ever-new ways.
